sick of this anti-aging obsession. let's go in the opposite direction. i want more characters who are hardened & grizzled & have a face lined with the harrowing tribulations of time--and then halfway through the narrative u find out they're 27

Everytime I go through an Euraxess PhD annoucement from an Italian University I look for more information about the PhD position besides the name of it and maybe the theme (not all have a description even) and every time I give up as it pretty much sends me to the applocation website with no more information than the euraxess.
Pls, why is there no more detailed descriptions included, I just want to know what you actually want the candidate to do and the skills so I can see adapt my application 🥲

A quick underwhelming breakfast
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PhD Day 14: feeling very tired today (it's not even 7 am yet). I have so many things to do and so little time. My big deadline for my grant proposal is getting closer and closer and I feel like all these other tasks get on the way.
I just need October to end to be able to focus on the research :)

idk i'd never paid much attention to past prologue aside from the opener but it's so fucking funny bc of the context it gives for everything else?? like okay garak cruises julian at the replimat (with unclear success), then gets approached by the sisters and says "shit, i need backup. who can i trust to be chill about black market dealing, yet honest enough to report it if necessary? ah yes the doctor will do nicely" ............aaand then julian flubs it so bad that garak immediately starts a book club called Espionage For Dummies. he says julian you are a baby bird. a tiny kitten. a helpless puppy all alone in a cutthroat world. you must open your eyes and learn to forage or you will never survive the winter and julian says okay 💖 yayy 💖 and by god they hold that book club every fucking tuesday for the next 5 to 7 years? only interrupted when there's an actual war on? the professional outrage was THAT strong

I am a frequent indulger in University AUs, and Aventurine is always depicted as a business student. I love to see it, but to me, he is a high school dropout who somehow managed to work his way into a recruiting position in a mega corporation (the IPC lol) and is frequently at the university for hiring fairs and things

I think one of the greatest angst potential for Ratio is you being noticed by Nous.
I've read tidbits of his lore, so imagine being his classmate during his time as an undergraduate in Cosmos Liberty University.
You struggled to understand the complex equations that he, Ratio, understood immediately. You barely even achieved the innovations he has done in record time.
And yet, for whatever reason...
You were seen and considered as part of the intelligent beings in the universe by Nous himself.
Imagine the betrayal and utter envy Ratio feels— this is during the time, where he aspired to become one of the members (from what I've gathered)— that his friend, best friend, was noticed by Nous.
Maybe you deserve it, but it didn't ease the gnawing disappointment stirring in his heart.

Hiii I rlly love ur asylum ford au and was wondering what stans reaction is to finding out where ford has been throughout his time in the portal🥹 apologies if its already been answered🫂🫂
Hi! I’m glad you enjoy it so much!
Stan’s reaction to Ford’s life since the portal would be sad, mostly. I imagine Ford didn’t want to tell Stan, but Shermie would’ve taken him aside and told him anyway.
Stan gives Ford a massive hug upon finding out. He kind of blames himself, and he apologises. Ford is a little confused because Stan doesn’t explain what he’s sorry for, but they hug none the less.
Stan is also angry. He already hated bill, but now it’s personal. If Stan ever sees that one eyes bitch again, he was going to rip him limb from limb.
Stan walks on eggshells around Ford for a while. He tries to be gentle (he’s not good at it) and really avoids bringing up things that might upset him. He’s not quite sure how to act around Ford, after 40 years apart, especially after finding out what Ford has been through. It’s obvious that they’ve both changed so much, but Stan isn’t sure what to do about it. So he does what he always did, and vows to protect his brother.
Ford didn’t think about how they both changed so much. It’s upsetting, not immediately falling into the same dynamic as when they were kids. He doesn’t like that Stan is so careful around him. In fact, it pisses him off a lot. Ford has spent 30 years being treated less than human. People never really saw him as a full person. He never expected his brother to act the same way.
it leads to conflict between Stan and Ford. Because neither of them are capable of just talking things out.
thanks for the ask! It was interesting to think about.

The joy of finding a queer reading of the lament for Fer Diad that
a) is recent b) I didn't already know about c) actually talks about queer theory beyond erotic potential d) engages with other useful theories like grievability
Tumblr media
Anyway, it's Housley, Marjorie, '"The noble way you blushed": queering mourning verse in the Ulster Cycle' in Grief, gender, and identity in the Middle Ages (2022), pp. 142–164.
I take back what I said about there only being one article on this and it being from 2009. There are two!! And one of them is from this decade!!

If you're interested in reading about how fiction shapes people's views on and actions regarding real-world issues, this article has a decent section on it.

‘I’ll fuck you up,’ Cato spat before she could stop herself, her voice hoarse as it left her lips— words scraping past raw throat and it caused her to cough, the raspy noise echoing through the room. ‘I don’t doubt that for a second.’ A pause, as Vitali Dobrynin reached into his pocket and took out a key, then reached for Cato’s wrist and— respectfully keeping his hands to himself— freed her from her restraints. ‘Cato Wu,’ he said, grabbing a chair from the side of the room and setting it down next to the surgery bed while Cato slowly sat up a second time, carefully now, allowing the dizziness to settle before she moved any further. ‘How’d you know my name?’ ‘I have my ways.’ ‘Right— fixer.’ ‘Do I sense contempt?’ Cato sucked in her cheeks and raised her hand, mockingly putting her thumb and the tip of her index finger a mere millimeter apart. ‘Thiiis much. Pinky promise.’

If still doing these from yesterday and also your subject is in sufficiently the right context: top 5 kennings?
oh I am too sleepy to do this justice but like
1. 'womanly damager of cloth' for menstruation - appears in Mábilar rímur (my beloved) and is the earliest Icelandic reference to menstruation outside of a medical text
2 through 4. I personally really like what rímur poets are doing with kennings for poetry. For Reasons, poetry is often called 'alcoholic drink of Óðinn' (because Ó stole it by chugging it in the form of mead) or 'ship of the dwarves' (because some dwarves offered the mead as the ticket for a boat ride off a tidal skerry). These are very normal kennings, there are So Many words for booze, boats, Óðinn and dwarves in Icelandic that you don't really have to work hard to come up with a new kenning.
But what rímur poets of approx. the 15th cen start doing is they take these established kennings and go on a little adventure with them. 'I'm nailing together the ship of the dwarves. Soon I will launch it on the slipway of my tongue past the skerry of my teeth.' And as the poem comes to a close, 'The ship of the dwarves has foundered' or 'The ship of the dwarves has made it safely back to harbour', depending on how self-deprecating they're being.
And then for the boozy kennings, they'll go, 'Well I tried to get a drink of the mead of poetry, but all that was left in the barrel was the dregs, so here you go I guess'. At least one poet combines the two, describing venturing into a ship's hold in search of the precious mead, only to find that all the other poets have drunk it dry :(
Anyway, I love and miss my weird little poetry guys, but not enough to apply for postdocs. Not quite.
5. Well it's gotta be that batshit trollwoman of the moon one, hasn't it?
sorry, 'fire-slinger of the storm of the trollwoman of the sheltering moon of the horse of the boathouse' = warrior
(horse of the boathouse = ship, sheltering moon of a ship = shield, trollwoman (attacker) of a shield = axe, storm of axes = battle, any kind of agentive noun of battle = warrior) (this is from a poem by Þórðr Sjáreksson, and yes I did have to go look it up on the Skaldic Project website because I forgot half of it :/ dishonour on me, dishonour on my cow, etc)
